Many men from the Shankill including a large number of tradesmen, found employment in the shipyards during the late 19th and right through the 20th centuries. In the late 19th Belfast boasted three shipyards; Harland & Wolfe Queens Island, by far the largest, would be building ships through two world wars and into the 21st century. One of those ships built by local hands was the legendary; Titanic.
Titanic, one of Belfast's most famous creations, will be commemorated in an extended annual festival from 31 March - 31 May; which will include key dates of the ship's build.
"Many cities and locations lay claim to a Titanic story but only one place can take credit for her legendary design, build and craftsmanship – Belfast"
During the two-month festival a variety of Titanic related activities will take place each weekend and over the Easter holiday period (23-26 April) with City Hall as the focal point. Highlights include free bus tours of Belfast's Titanic Quarter, free Titanic walking tours, artefact displays and a series of talks, plays, debates and films all Titanic related. Whatever your interest there will be something for everyone.
A brochure and list of events can be found on the Belfast City Council Website.
